What to Wear | Football Game Outfits: Texas VS OU 1200 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

In just two short weeks, it’ll be time again for the annual Red River Rivalry. This will be my first time attending the game and weekend events as an alum (Hook ’em forever) – seriously crazy talk right there! Even though I’ve done this weekend for four years straight, I’m still finding myself debating what to wear for each part of the weekend. That’s why I decided to style and share 4 football game outfits because I know that lots of you might be on the hunt for outfit ideas for Texas/OU weekend!

I also made sure to pick affordable pieces (under $50) from places like Target, H&M, etc.,  because I know how expensive this weekend can be!

Let’s start with Friday night (before all the rivalry begins 😉 )…

FOOTBALL GAME OUTFITS FOR FRIDAY NIGHT:

Whether you’re an alum and grabbing drinks with friends or still in school and heading to a bar tab with your date, a great Texas/OU outfit for Friday night is a must. The outfit I put together below features lots of fall touches (velvet and a suede-like skirt) but is also lightweight enough to keep you cool in warm, fall Texas temps.

FOOTBALL GAME OUTFITS FOR GAME DAY:

No matter which side you’re cheering for, you know you want  your Texas/OU outfit to look good for your team! It’ll bring them good luck, right? I put together two outfits for the game. One outfit you can wear to really make it known which side you’re on. The other one gives you more of a chic vibe and would also make for a great outfit if you’re coming to the game as a “completely objective third party outsider with no personal interest in the matter.” (Name that movie! I know every line and could probably do a one woman show…) If you choose to go with the cami look, please tell me you’ll wear plenty of sunscreen!

Outfit #1: Cami | Skirt | Boots | Bag

Outfit #2: Blouse | Burgundy Skirt | Denim Skirt | Bag | Boots

FOOTBALL GAME OUTFITS FOR SATURDAY NIGHT:

Win or lose, you have to finish the weekend with a bang. And that means that your evening Texas/OU outfit needs to do the talking. Why not keep it sleek, chic, and a little bit sexy?! Even though all the burgundy tones may be reminiscent of the enemy team’s colors for you Longhorns, it’s still a gorgeous fall color that’ll make for a killer Saturday night look. Both of these outfit options are lightweight enough for Texas temperatures while still being very fall-ready. If you’re heading to a post-game formal, then this velvet dress would be a great option. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing after the game, but if my friends and I decide to go out I bet we’ll be doing a lot of walking which makes me want to pick the trendy trousers outfit! Top it all off with simple, gold jewelry and a metallic clutch for just the right ensemble.

Style and lifestyle blogger Ashley Deatherage shares save or splurge for fall staples | Never Without Lipstick | fall staples, fall wardrobe, fall outfits, fall fashion 2017, outfit ideas, shopping hack

Save vs. Splurge: Fall Staples

Save vs. Splurge: Fall Staples 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

Style and lifestyle blogger Ashley Deatherage shares save or splurge for fall staples | Never Without Lipstick | fall staples, fall wardrobe, fall outfits, fall fashion 2017, outfit ideas, shopping hack

When it comes to fall staples, I like to be very strategic about what I save on and what I splurge on. There are so many sales during this season which means so many temptations to get spendy on certain pieces. That’s why I decided to break down my top fall staples and explain my reasoning behind saving or splurging on each one.

SAVE:

Slide-on loafers: Yes, I have been in love with the Gucci slide-on loafers and other similar (equally pricey) versions for quite some time. Even though I’m a big proponent of investing into pieces that you’ll get years of wear out of, I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that on this particular pair of shoes. They’re without a doubt not only a fall staple for me but also a wardrobe staple in general. I just knew that I could hunt down a well-made pair for a much more reasonable price. When I found this pair, I about died. I wear them all the time especially to the office because they’re so easy to throw on and look chic with a lot of different outfits…all for a fraction of the cost of the real deal. They have real leather uppers and soles so they’re definitely durable and people have mistaken them for the Gucci pair so many times 😉 !

Plaid blazer: So I know that blazers have always been a “thing” so to say, but I didn’t realize how big they would be this season until I saw a gorgeous blazer that my favorite, Emma Hill, was wearing nonstop. Imagine how my heart dropped when I saw that that blazer was over $350! I knew that I didn’t want to drop that kind of cash on a piece that is, yes a fall staple, but not as essential as a coat or boots. And since it’s a trending item, I knew I’d be able to find very similar versions at Nordstrom, H&M, or Zara really easily! It’s still important to look for the right fit and good tailoring even while saving on overall price.

SPLURGE:

Over-the-knee boots: The price tag on these boots might spook you a bit initially, but hear me out. Which one of us hasn’t worn a pair of boots to death for fall season after season? Yeah, none of us. If there is a piece for your fall staple wardrobe that you know will get a ton of wear, it might be a good idea to invest more into that piece up front. That way you can guarantee that the piece is high quality and durable for a much longer time than a less expensive pair. Think in terms of cost per wear when you’re making the decision to invest.

I knew that I wanted these boots because I’d worn similar styles relentlessly in seasons past. But I wasn’t up for paying full-price. I made sure to wait for the right time to buy them with the right sale. I ended up snagging these boots for $300+ off during a Labor Day sale, so you can actually end up saving on these boots if you’re patient! (They’re currently 25% off with code EOTS17 on Shopbop right now! Christmas present, perhaps?)

Leather jacket: Ah, my leather jacket: what a major fall staple in my closet. It’s just the right weight for warmth for Texas fall and winter and I like to wear it as my “coat” layer when I go out on the town when it’s colder. This is another piece that I’d recommend splurging on purely because of how much wear you can get out of it. Material is everything when it comes to picking the right leather jacket. And you’ll hear me say this a lot, but durability is a key factor that plays into my philosophy behind splurging on a leather jacket.

SAVE OR SPLURGE:

Turtleneck sweater: Your decision to save or splurge on a fall staple sweater is really up to the climate that you live in. Although I’ve always wanted to splurge on a gorgeous cashmere or wool turtleneck, I’ve just never really found a reason to while living in Texas. This is an item I would save on just because I don’t think I’d get too much wear out of a more expensive sweater where I live. I go for lighter weight fabrics that are still a warm, bottom layer and then pop a blazer or coat over that!

Was this post helpful for y’all? Let me know and I’m happy to do more posts like this to break down how I shop – especially right now for fall staples!

A few weeks ago I made my way into Zara to take a peek at what they had laid out for this season. I knew that Zara fall fashion for 2017 would be very spot on and give me a good taste as to what the trends are for the season. It’s also nice that Zara is a European company because I feel like I’m getting an edge on trends that the euro ladies are sporting across the pond.

I’ve found that it’s much easier to go into the store (Dallas girls: I went to the Galleria one instead of the store at Northpark – I think it has better selection! Anyone else agree?!). The Zara website needs some serious updating – not the smoothest user experience in my opinion (but I do love getting their emails for the style inspiration, worth the signup in my opinion). Anyways, I found some amazing fall staples on my last trip and had to share what I found.

Here’s what I ended up walking away with from Zara’s fall fashion game this season:

  • Checked dress ($49.90): Somehow all of the pieces I got can actually be worn to the office very easily. Now that I have a full-time job, I like to buy pieces that I know I can easily wear to the office on a daily basis and out on the weekends as well. The fit and tailoring of this dress is classic that I think I can wear for many fall seasons. It’s also a light enough fabric to keep me feeling cool in the 90 degree Texas temperatures right now.
  • Plaid blazer ($129): The plaid blazer (or the blazer in general) is the new black this season. Seriously every European blogger I see is wearing one. SO if you want to be #euro and #chic for fall, then a plaid blazer is the perfect place to start. Consider draping one over your shoulders if temperatures drop at night or it’s chilly in your office (mine is reminiscent of the arctic tundra). It’s a great transition piece and might continue to be a really good layer for warmth for girls who live in Texas fall/winter.
  • Black + white pajama top (29.90): I’d been hunting around for a sleek and chic pajama top after seeing them styled on Pinterest so often, so when I found this top I knew I wanted it. It’s formal enough to wear with trousers for the office and then I like that I can style it more casually with ripped blue jeans.

Zara fall fashion for 2017 is really good, and I feel like I could’ve spent so much money on #allthethings. There were tons of fun trendy pieces like their ‘rodeo’ collection, but I made sure to keep myself focused to pick good staple pieces that’ll take me throughout this season and into more seasons to come. That’s why I stuck with classic, tailored pieces like blazers (you can never have too many jackets) and dresses (easy to wear especially for Southern gals in the heat until November)!

I’m sure there are more Zara lovers reading along! What have your thoughts been on the fall fashion at Zara this season?! Let me know over on Instagram!

There isn’t a day that goes by when I’m not grateful that I am part of the generation that created athleisure. Millennials went and made outrageously casual outfits trendy. I mean, if you just look at all of the NYFW street style pics, you’ll see athleisure pieces incorporated into high fashion outfits left and right. Consider it the patron saint of my generation.

I’m not complaining – athleisure is probably my most-worn category of clothing – my spirit outfit, if you will.

Now that it’s September, I’m convinced that my favorite athleisure pieces are going to be the easiest to transition into fall (there really is no other option, to be honest). My outfit in this post was so comfortable that I ended up wearing it straight to work after my shoot; I just swapped my leather jacket for a jean jacket for a bit more booty coverage for the office.

With the help from my co-workers’ style and some inspiration from Pinterest, I’m sharing some of my style tips that I’ve found to transition your favorite athleisure pieces into the fall for the office, running around, and even girls’ night out!

At the office:

  • Opt for tailored pieces: Because athleisure pieces tend to come in more relaxed fits, add some structure to your outfit with a blazer (30% off until midnight tonight!), military jacket, or a collared button down shirt for the office. This way you can still ball out in the comfort of a pair of joggers and look professional for your daily meetings because #bossbabe.

Running around town:

  • Bring out your street sneaks: This may be geeky but I honestly prefer to run errands in my running tennis shoes. I just feel so much more stable and like I can get things done faster. Anyone else? But if I want to look more put together for a day out and about or if I’m meeting up with friends, I always grab my Adidas Campus sneakers because they’re a chic neutral and also really comfortable. Keep your look sporty yet cozy with a statement sweatshirt or oversized hooded cardigan topped off with your go-to ball cap (the predecessor of dry shampoo).

For happy hour:

  • Get trendy with it: So you’ve decided to hit the town (after bailing on 98% of your previous plans? Same.), but you want to channel your ultimate sporty spice chic. Yes [clap!] girl [clap!]. Would the real fall trends please stand up?! Obviously, step one is throwing on a pair of pointy toe heels (this pair is actually comfortable, no like really). Then pick your poison: a lace cami and bomber jacket combo or a mock neck tank and some oversized denim jacket vibes. This may be pushing it, but I’d bet you’d look killer by throwing in this trending hat style, too.

Where will you wear your fall-ready athleisure outfit first?!

4 Fall Transitional Outfits

4 Fall Transitional Outfits 1200 800 neverwithoutlipstick

Now that September has arrived I think I can almost hear my sweaters and booties calling my name from my closet begging to be worn, but it’s just not quite time for heavy layers here in Texas. That leaves me at the task of styling the ultimate fall transitional outfit. Season transitional looks tend to take some thought because Texas temperatures can be moody from week to week as the seasons change over. I’ve found the key to success to be wearing lightweight fabrics in fall appropriate tones and mastering the art of layering…like what I’m featuring in the FOUR fall transitional outfit ideas below for errands, girls’ night, and even the office.

Fall Transitional Outfit #1

Checked Dress: I found this cute checked number at Zara last week, and I wore it to dinner with friends immediately that night! The cut, weight, and trendy pattern of this dress is exactly what you need as a base for fall transitional outfits. You can easily dress this up or down with loafers or block heel sandals. The loose sleeves and the polo collar keep things cool and lightweight (cotton and polyester blend) while the silhouette is a classic for fall looks.

Fall Transitional Outfit #2

Blazer & tee: This outfit embodies lightweight layering that’s going to be an essential style trick to hone for the fall transition. I recommend pairing a super breathable tee with a favorite pair of distressed jeans because it’s an outfit you could wear out and about or to work even on hotter days. To keep the outfit fall-ready, I just draped or wore the blazer over the tee for a perfectly pulled together look that screams fall and is checking off the trend for a plaid double breasted blazer 🙂 ! I definitely wore open toe sandals with this look to keep things cooler and lighter weight, but I think it goes perfectly with a pointy toe pump for the office.

Fall Transitional Outfit #3

Joggers & sneakers: This is a sneak peek of a whole outfit that I’ll be posting about later this week, but I had to share it because there’s no better genre of clothing to make fall transitional outfits with than athleisure. These joggers are super airy and you can easily pair them with a thin longsleeve tee or just your favorite tee in general. The sneakers give you a closed toe shoe if that’s more breathable and not to mention so comfortable. If you wanted to take this look from day to night, just drape your leather jacket over your shoulders. This will be a great go-to look when temps drop even lower at night!

Fall Transitional Outfit #4

Trouser leggings (treggings): This just in: trousers are hot for this fall season according to my co-workers who just returned from fashion week (read about more fall 2017 trends here). And why not combine the season’s hottest trend with the beloved fit and comfort of a legging? This cropped trouser legging has been an incredible addition to my fall transitional wardrobe because it’s short enough to still feel cool but can easily be dressed up with a button down (my ruffled one is from Target for $28!) or dressed down with a sweater to accommodate the changing temperatures.

And there you have it: four fall transitional outfits that you can start wearing now. What’re pieces you like to wear during the fall transition period?

Fall Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe

Fall Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

Whether the Texas temperatures want to believe it or not, fall has arrived and so have fall trends. My birthday is in September, so I’m an autumn baby and my need for fall temps, fall colors, fall textures affects me on a molecular level. Not to mention that I’m bombarded with inspiration left and right with NYFW 2017 going down right now. I just had to share the newest fall trends that I’m loving and that I actually think I can add into my wardrobe (and so can you!).

You’ll find pieces below that you can shop to start making your fall wardrobe the hottest it’s ever been!

(Pssst, don’t want to lose this list of fall trends and outfit inspo? Pin the pic below and you won’t have to!)

Style blogger Ashley Deatherage of Never WIthout Lipstick shares five fall trends that you can easily and realistically add to your wardrobe | fall fashion 2017, fall fashion trends, fall fashion casual, fall fashion work, fall fashion color trends, fall outfit ideas

RUFFLES:

Ruffles are making an appearance everywhere this fall season and you can find them on dresses, blouses, even on sweatshirts (ew to that, though). What I love most about the ruffle trend is that it can be dressed up and down easily and it’ll flow seamlessly from season to season.

How to wear it: If you’re looking to add an incredibly feminine and elegant touch to your fall outfits, look no further. Pair a ruffle sleeve sweater with an a-line mini skirt and booties for a ruffled weekend casual look. Want to wear ruffles but not be too girly? Then pair a ruffle blouse with jeans and sneakers or a ruffle hem dress with a studded bootie.

HIGH COLLARS:

Pride and Prejudice called and Jane Austen wants her collars back. Sorry, Jane, I can’t come to the phone right now. High Victorian collars are here to stay this fall. This might just be one of the fall trends that I’m most excited about. A statement collar takes your outfit to an ultra chic level and beyond and I’m not complaining one bit.

How to wear it: Let a high collar blouse do the talking and pair it with classic tailored pieces like a fitted trouser legging and a velvet slide. A high collar can also be a fall trend to bring into your office style because it’s conservative and professional while still elevating your look for the fall season.

MOODY FLORALS:

Florals for fall? Actually groundbreaking. And this season the florals are just as moody as Miranda Priestly herself. Think romantic floral tapestries or shiny brocade florals that you might see in a museum or medieval castle. You’ll be seeing very rich, cool tones like deep purples, charcoal grays, and dark magenta pinks instead of your standard mustard or brown hues.

How to wear it: Of all of these fall trends, florals are always going to be an easy way to add interest to your outfits. If you want to be an over-achiever and kill two trends with one stone, go for a high-collared (maybe even with a tie-neck?) floral blouse and tuck it into a pair of dark vintage wash high-waisted jeans; top it off with a kitten heel to really seal the deal.

RED:

Style blogger Ashley Deatherage of Never WIthout Lipstick shares five fall trends that you can easily and realistically add to your wardrobe | fall fashion 2017, fall fashion trends, fall fashion casual, fall fashion work, fall fashion color trends, fall outfit ideas

Cue the Taylor Swift song immediately. (Oh sorry, the *old* Taylor song…) Red is, no joke, the red hot trend for fall. Usually I gravitate towards bordeaux or burgundy hues every autumn, but this season we’re talking candy apple and cherry reds. As an addict to neutrals, I usually veer away from any colors that aren’t somewhat reminiscent of the earth or dirt, but red is such a classic color that it’s probably the easiest color to incorporate into your neutral fall wardrobe. I got this bag as a Christmas present last year and you better believe that I’m toting it around nonstop now that red is THE fall color. See how I styled my red bag here!

How to wear it: Other than red nails or red lips (read how to apply a bold lip here), think about pairing some red pumps with your favorite blue skinny jeans for casual Friday at the office. And if you’re not ready for an all red ensemble, go for red accents like a track pant with a red stripe down the leg – this will have a slimming effect on your legs and keep your outfit on trend.

CHECKS & PLAIDS:

Not only are plaids and checks hot on the fall trend menu but so are pant suits. Keep it business professional this season with plaid trousers and perhaps a double breasted checked blazer. One of my all-time favorite bloggers to follow has been wearing this plaid blazer nonstop and I seriously can’t get enough. This trend is pretty much like introducing a new neutral into your wardrobe, so feel free to style it with everything from your go-to shirt dress or a lace cami for a nighttime look.

How to wear it: Just like I mentioned above, I wore a lace cami under my Zara checked blazer last weekend, and I knew right away that it was an outfit I’d be repeating (check it out here). Add in a pair of black distressed skinnies and a suede block heel sandal to keep things classic with a cool-girl vibe.

P.S. – Some trends from last season that are here to stay for round two are:

No matter how many cute pieces I find for each season, I am always reminded how important it is to have amazing wardrobe basics as the foundation of my closet. They’re the pieces I’m always grabbing if I’m rushing and the foundation of endless outfits every season without fail.

It’s taken me some time to really pinpoint what those pieces are and how to find them, but I’ve finally come to a point where I know which brands and which styles make the basics that really make my wardrobe what it is today.

With that said, I wanted to share my top 4 tips with you today so that you too can have a closet that you love and that best serves your everyday outfit needs!

Outfit Details: Shirt | Jeans | Belt | Shoes

  1. Fit above all else: If you’re looking for something that you’ll wear over and over again, you have to make sure that it’s an incredible fit. You want to feel like it’s the most flattering fit for your body type because that way you’ll always feel confident when you’re wearing it. I can’t tell you how many times I bought pieces that just weren’t the right fit and I felt uncomfortable the whole time I was wearing it. That = NOT a wardrobe basic! A few fits that I love for my pear shape body type are a-line skirts, high-waisted jeans, or a fit-and-flare dress.
  2. High quality & durable fabrics: If I haven’t said it enough, I’ll say it again: don’t pick foundational pieces for your wardrobe that aren’t going to be worn often. Your basics need to be able to endure a bit of wear and tear as you’ll wear them nonstop because you love them so much – right?! Right. Just make sure they’re easily washed or dry cleaned and not easily ruined by the occasional stain! But you also want your fabric choices to last you longer than 6 months or so. I live by my cotton button downs
  3. Versatile colors: If you might not have noticed, I am a big time lover of neutrals. I don’t know what it is but I’m just not drawn to bright colors or patterns, but worry not (I’ve been watching British period pieces all weekend, can you tell?)! Your wardrobe basics by no means have to be in neutral colors for them to be considered your go-to’s. Just make sure that you shop for pieces in colors that can easily be paired with your favorite pair of jeans one day and a skirt for your work day the next. I always gravitate to white, black, blush pink, and tan or khaki tones (you color lovers might be yawning right now :P)!
  4. Classic tailoring: My grandpa was a tailor and my mom swears that his attention to detail and obsession with a well-tailored fit is genetic. And she might just be right! I just can’t resist the touch of excellent tailoring and make sure to pick pieces that are well-tailored above all else. Classic tailoring is just as important as the perfect fit. Tailoring will give your basics that versatile silhouette that’ll go with nearly every other piece in your wardrobe. Pieces with attention to tailoring are constructed to last and earn their spot in your closet for seasons and seasons.

I hope that these tips were helpful to you and you’ll keep them in mind next time you’re out shopping for basics to add to your closet! If you’re in need of some inspiration, some of the brands I love most for shopping for basics are: Madewell, Everlane, and Neiman’s Last Call for deals on Vince and Equipment pieces. HELLO AGAIN!

I know that it has been a short while since there’s been a new post up on NWL, but I am so glad to be back. I took a bit of a “blogging break” for most of this month to really dig into my brand and my mission/purpose with this blog. I want to be as helpful as I can possibly be to each one of you that reads my blog posts or my Instagram captions. So that’s what will be going into each post that I write on my blog and what you can expect from me! If there is ever a post that you’d like me to write about, please feel free to email me at contact@neverwithoutlipstick.com or just in general if you ever have a question on how to style a certain piece or what to wear to a specific event!

And now onto this outfit…

After two trips to California this summer (San Fran 3-day Guide coming on Thursday!), I think that the laid back yet edgy styles started to rub off on me. Whenever I travel I’m always looking at what other girls are wearing to get inspiration for my own wardrobe as well as some research, if you will, to be able to tell others what to wear to certain destinations. And this outfit is a blend of some of the key pieces I saw over and over again on my trips.

Oversized Denim Jacket

Where has this jacket been all my life?! I’ve always considered my jean jacket as a staple in my closet, but I had never really considered how versatile an oversized version could be. Especially when the temps start to drop and you need a bit more coverage than a more cropped jacket! It’s like wearing your favorite oversized cardigan but just in denim. I think it just adds the most edgy/cool/casual vibe to any outfit that I pair it with whether that’s with a mini dress or my favorite pair of black jeans!

Floral Sundress

Before I had even been in LA for a full 24 hours I knew that I needed a dress like this and was on the hunt right away. I can’t tell you how many cute Cali girls were wearing flirty and feminine dresses like this one. But what I love most about this style of dress is that it can so easily be styled a bunch of different ways. I’ve worn it so many times since it came in and I’ve been able to style it with block heels for a classic look or sneakers to keep things more casual. I also LOVE the fit on this dress; it’s so flattering with the tie-waist and a-line skirt. Every time I wear it I feel like I’ve lost 5 pounds because of how flattering this silhouette is!

Street Style Sneakers

I can’t believe I’ve been able to hold out on buying Adidas sneakers for a year now. So many of my study abroad friends were buying them while we were in Paris, but I just couldn’t commit. I just didn’t think that the Superstar was the right fit for my body type and style. The toe was just too rounded and it shortened my leg in a way that I just wasn’t loving. It wasn’t until I visited San Fran that I saw a girl wearing the Campus sneaker in ‘Clear Brown’ and knew that I had to have a pair for myself. She was wearing a sleek trench, skinny jeans, and these sneakers and it was just the perfect easy casual outfit to throw on over and over again. Not to mention comfy! I found these sneakers at Urban Outfitters for a much better price (they’re currently on sale for $50!!) and got a size 7 based on reviews that they run a bit big – they fit perfectly. These sneakers will be going with just about everything this season for me: skinny jeans, dresses, track pants, you name it!

You know when people say, “Black, like my soul!”? Ugh, it bugs me. Black is one of the palette pillars of my closet, so I don’t like people misrepresenting my love! I adore the color black, but I don’t have a dark soul, okay? Glad we’ve covered that. Now onto the point…

Have you ever been hesitant to wear an outfit that’s all the same color? I know it can be a little freaky at first, but I’m here to say that with a few tips and tricks you could be onto styling some of the most chic outfits you’ve ever worn, especially to work. Thinking up new outfits for work each day can be exhausting, so knowing how to throw together some monochrome pieces together will reduce your decision making time. And then maybe grab a few more winks of sleep? Let’s get to my tips!

  • Opt for tailored pieces to make pairing items of the same color easier like collared shirts or a-line fit skirts – these are also very office appropriate as well
  • Pick dynamic designs like bell sleeves or cascading ruffles to add interest to a monochromatic outfit
  • Use accessories to break up the same color like belts, scarves, or earrings – but make sure to choose a neutral color as an accent so that you don’t take away from the monochromatic look
  • Add in a contrasting color in with layers like a denim jacket or military jacket if you need a little warmth in the office

And don’t forget that the Nordstrom Sale ends on August 6th, so make sure to grab any items you’ve had your eye on! I’m sharing some of my favorite items to wear at the office below:

Who’s ready for the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

I’m going to be 100% honest about each thing I purchased from the Nordstrom sale and going into why I kept what I did and why I sent back certain items. There are so many items in this sale and I found it difficult not to want everything. But once the packages came in and I tried everything on it became clear that some pieces just weren’t worth the hype while some were major winners for my wardrobe.

But before we get into it, I want to start off with a few little tips and tricks that I’ve learned while shopping from the Nordstrom Sale:

  • Use the “Buy Now & Pickup In-Store” option as much as possible: Being able to pick up my purchases within the same day of buying them was so nice for so many reasons. I was able to very quickly size up which pieces probably weren’t the quality I was looking for and vice versa. When I was opening up packages yesterday, there were definitely some pieces that I know I would’ve returned on the spot had I been able to pick them up in store. That definitely would’ve saved me some time having to go back and forth to the store to make returns!
  • Stick to the brands you know and love: There are so many brands that caught my eye during this sale that I hadn’t heard of before. While this is exciting, it can also be misleading because you’re unfamiliar with sizing or quality from these brands. I decided to try items from really affordable brands and this worked out for me on a few pieces but not so much on the majority of items. I think I got caught up in the crazy good price point and then ended up disappointed when the quality just wasn’t quite there or it looked nothing like what was on the website.
  • Read product descriptions about materials: This is really just a part B to the above tip, but just make sure that you know a bit more about the fabrics of the items you’re ordering. When I buy something (especially for the winter), I want to know that I can wear it to death and it’ll hold up for more than just the few months of a season. Look for items that’re made with wool/wool-blend or have a higher amount of cotton rather than polyester or other synthetic fibers.
  • Dig further into customer reviews: One thing I LOVE about Nordstrom is the loads of customer reviews on each product. There is seriously nothing more helpful when you’re trying to make a decision about a piece!

WHAT I KEPT

  • 1.State Waylan Slip-On Sneaker: I just got back from a work trip last night and immediately opened these up, and I was immediately obsessed and considering ordering another pair. The reviews said the shoe runs true to size which made me nervous because a lot of the time sneakers can run small for me. But I went with a size 7 and it really does fit perfectly. They are SO cute and sleek (basically look exactly like the Vince version) and the sole is slightly platform which is super comfy and adds some much appreciated length to my legs. Now I’ve got my eye on the olive green color…
  • Trouve Layering Tee:  I WANT EVERY COLOR. This tee is going to be my everything this fall and winter. I had barely even slipped it over my head before I was thinking, “yes, yes, yes!” I like that it’s fitted (but not TOO clingy aka room for the occasional bloating 😉 ) because that means it’ll tuck in seamlessly to high-waisted jeans or skirts this winter. I got it in a small and it’s a great fit; sleeves are a bit long but you can scrunch them up a pinch without it looking weird. And I seriously couldn’t even finish writing this paragraph before I ordered it in grey…because it’s STILL IN STOCK.
  • BP Lace Cami: Y’all love this cami! It has been one of the top selling items from NWL during this sale – y’all are amazing, seriously. It’s currently sold out but DON’T WORRY – this one is too good for them not to restock. I went with a size small which has been a perfect fit and the straps are adjustable if you’re worried about the neckline being revealing. [ In-stock alternative here ]
  • BP Rib Knit Cardigan: Over the moon about this cardigan, let me tell ya. It’s just the right weight to be warm in a cold office or in the grocery store this summer if you’re wanting to wear it now. And it’s also the perfect weight to wear in the “colder” seasons we have here in Texas. I went with a size small for a closer fit, and y’all, it’s SO flattering. If that’s the fit you’re looking for, I recommend sizing down. It’s currently pretty sold out but will be restocked – I will keep you updated! [ In-stock alternative here ]
  • BP Cold Shoulder Tunic: This tunic is also another fave for you guys! I really love it and honestly wish it was appropriate to wear it now. I love the tunic fit and it’s just the right weight for fall transitional time. [ In-stock alternative here or here ]

RETURNS

  • BlankNYC Suede Jacket: This one was a bummer for me. I know that I had previously written about my love for this jacket, and I’m still absolutely obsessed with my other BlankNYC jacket, but I think that this brand changed some things about the fit of this piece. I don’t always have an easy time buying jackets because a lot of them will be too tight in the shoulders when I cross my arms. So with this jacket, the fit in the shoulders was just right but the sleeves were too long and the fit through the body was too big and boxy. You might be thinking I just could’ve sized down to a small, but then I wouldn’t be able to move around very much as the fit around the shoulders would be too tight. Now I know this brand to run very true to size, so for those of you who may have narrower shoulders, this jacket could still be a great fit for you. But I just wanted to let y’all know that it just didn’t work out for me, so I am going to be on the lookout for another suede moto jacket this season and will keep you updated on what I find.
  • BP Bell Cuff Sweater: I really love this sweater! It’s SO CUTE. But like I mentioned in this post, it fit well in the arms but it was too short on my torso (I have a long torso!) so I decided to order it in a medium to see if that would help with length. But that size up only left me with a sweater that was too baggy and boxy and the bell sleeve cuffs were hanging like sad deflated balloons 🙁 NOOOO! I am mega-bummed about this one but I have no doubt in my mind that I’ll be hunting down other bell sleeve sweaters like a mad woman – so stay tuned!
  • BP V-Neck Pullover: This pullover had all the potential to be a contender for my heart. But alas no such luck. I ordered the small because the site says it runs a bit large. Online it looked like it fit more like a tunic but I didn’t think that it was long enough to drape over my butt for some coverage. If I were to size up to a medium for length then it would definitely be way too low cut and I’d need to wear a cami under it or something which is fine but just not ideal for me. Back to Nordy’s it goes. I now know to stick with my fave thermal pullovers from Madewell!
  • Dreamers by Debut Rib Knit Open Cardigan: This cardigan might have been one of the biggest disappointments from this sale 🙁 I was just certain that it was going to be everything I wanted and more, but unfortunately, I was wrong! The color just was not what I saw on the internet and really was more of a very blah cream tone. It was also super chunky, and the way it laid on my body was so unflattering. And the fabric just felt so synthetic and almost plastic-y to me which was a turnoff for something that I wanted to snuggle up in all the time. Back to square one on finding a replacement creamy cardigan!

WAITING ON THE VERDICT

  • UPDATE – KEEP*** Marc Fisher Yomi Chealsea booties: I LOVE these booties and they’re actually the only pair of shoes I got from the Nordstrom Sale. I just wasn’t thrilled by any of the other pairs that were in my price range. But I always end up loving any pair of Marc Fisher shoes that I get, so I knew that I couldn’t go wrong here. There isn’t a fall/winter season that goes by that I don’t want a pointy-toe boot and these did just the trick for me visually. Marc Fisher runs very true to size for me so I went with a size 7 in these. The 7 is a perfect fit and they are so easy to get on with the gussets on the side!
  • UPDATE – RETURN** Lush Side Slit Tee: I ended up really not liking the way that this shirt fit. I ordered it in a small and the fit was too close on my chest and not an oversized look. I really prefer the more relaxed v-neck neckline on my favorite Madewell tees, if you’re looking for that I’d recommend sizing up one size for a looser fit. [ In-stock alternative here ]

WAITING FOR A RESTOCK

  • Free People Oversized Plaid Tunic: I had this bad boy in my cart the first day of early access and I didn’t get it! I am kicking myself now. I LOVE the high-low fit and it looks exactly like something I would incorporate into my fall wardrobe uniform.
  • Leith Easy Circle Cardigan: Although I may be currently in a vulnerable state when it comes to cardigans, I’m willing to put myself out there again when it comes to this one. It’s currently only available in blue in XS, but I will be patiently awaiting a restock of this sweater in cream!
