25 Holiday Party Dresses under $100 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

It’s officially the season for holiday party dresses! I’ve been sick with a mini stomach flu bug so looking at these pretty dresses was the perfect pick-me-up. My friend actually enlisted me to go out shopping to look for holiday party dresses which got me thinking…

There were so many good options, but it seemed like a lot were overpriced! Holiday party dresses shouldn’t be outrageously unaffordable in my opinion. They’re usually meant for one occasion or one time of year, so your investment should match the expected wear you’ll get out of the dress!

Scroll down to shop some of this season’s cutest and most festive holiday party dresses under $100.

  • When it comes to the holidays, I usually avoid heavily sequined or metallic dresses. But this mini and this mini would make for the perfect tailored and tactful shiny option!
  • You can truly never go wrong with a velvet wrap dress for holiday parties! This $88 emerald number is one of my favorites in this round up of holiday party dresses.
  • If you’re heading to a more formal event or something for work, consider a midi dress like this one!
  • Last but not least, you can’t go wrong with a classic fit-and-flare party dress. The ruffle detailing on this burgundy mini dress gives it an updated yet feminine feel!

A Perfect Little Black Dress

A Perfect Little Black Dress 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

A few weeks ago, I was helping a friend’s daughter find a homecoming dress and stumbled across this perfect little black dress during my search. I couldn’t get it out of my head and knew I had to shoot it! The ruffle detail makes such a statement but still maintains the essence of a classic, perfect little black dress.

I think it would be an amazing party dress for the holidays or New Year’s Eve if you’re not into the sequin thing? It’s now on sale for $39, so it would also make a great, affordable dress for sorority/fraternity holiday formals coming up!

Don’t let the price fool you, though! The fabric doesn’t feel cheap at all and the fit was very flattering truly making it the perfect little black dress for the winter/holiday season and beyond.

I especially love this dress (under $45) and this dress (under $75) as alternatives to the dress I’m wearing in this post! They’re both the same material and also have a gorgeous statement neckline. Again, I love that these options are both really affordable while still being good quality. If you’re going to lots of events this holiday season and don’t want to outfit repeat, then save money on a few of your dresses with one of the dress options below!

Adding in a velvet crossbody or clutch keeps the whole look holiday and winter-ready. Those are two under $20 options from Amazon – bags for events can get beaten up/spilled on so no need to drop big $ on them! Last but not least, I think that these shoes are such a good one-and-done pair to have in your closet. I wear them all the time and they truly go with everything. How to Style Sneakers for Winter 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

I never thought I’d be the person that would not only have multiple pairs of sneakers on my wish list at all times but also have so many different pairs in my closet. Sneakers have quickly become some of the most-worn shoes in my closet and now I consider them a wardrobe staple. They’re an especially good go-to shoe in the winter because they make for a nice, comfy break from boots and booties all the time. Boots aren’t always necessarily made for walkin’ ;)…

4 ESSENTIAL TIPS TO STYLE YOUR SNEAKERS FOR WINTER:

  • If you have an outfit that you’re wanting to wear with boots/booties, I can bet that it’ll look just as cute with a pair of leather sneakers. Always a good choice if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking and want to be comfortable.
  • Pair sneakers with unexpected pieces like dresses or skirts. It makes for such an edgy change!
  • Pick a pair of sneakers in a neutral color so that you can guarantee they’ll pair seamlessly with everything in your closet.
  • Try on multiple styles before purchasing to make sure that the fit is flattering. Since sneakers are flat, some styles can shorten your leg based on the style or the toe shape. I avoid high-top sneakers and prefer low-top, narrower options because it gives the appearance of elongating my leg!

5 Cute Summer to Fall Outfits to Have On Repeat

5 Cute Summer to Fall Outfits to Have On Repeat 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

If you live in Texas or the south, then this blog post title might intrigue you. It could, more appropriately, be titled “5 summer to fall outfits to wear until it’s November and actually feels like fall and I can maybe wear a sweater” – thoughts?! Although it is indeed September, it is still SO.DANG.HOT. Happy to state the obvious for my Dallas readers out there 😉  This time of year is always a struggle to dress for because we’re all feeling the fall vibes but can’t dress like it quite yet. So…what are we supposed to wear?! Good question. I rounded up 5 summer to fall outfits that you can have on rotation for work, birthday brunches, nights out on the town, etc. Don’t be ashamed to be an outfit repeater in any of these looks because we gotta do what we gotta do to look fall-ready but not be sweating.

5 SUMMER TO FALL OUTFITS TO HAVE ON REPEAT

Cami + Cardi Combo:

Of all the summer to fall outfits, this one is SO easy to throw on and go. You can also dress it up or down really easily depending on where you’re headed.

Cami (My exact cami is sold out! This one is quite low cut, so I only plan on wearing it for night events or going out. Option with more coverage here.) | Cardigan (Old, linked similar!) | Jeans (size down, I’m in a 27) | Purse (non-designer option here) | Hoops | Zodiac Necklace | Initial Necklacesummer to fall transition outfits, fall outfit ideas, casual fall outfit, fall transition outfits, fall transition outfits for work | Summer to Fall Outfits featured by popular Dallas fashion blogger, Never Without Lipstick: Cami + Cardigan

Eyelet + Denim:

You can still pair a summery piece like an eyelet blouse with your fall staples like your favorite denim. Once temps drop a little more, you could swap the block heeled sandals for ankle booties.

This guy has been such a best seller around here…looks like we all have good taste 😉 It’s really cozy and perfect for lazy days, errands, cold offices, grocery stores, definitely travel, and more. I really love the split hem because it covers the booty and will be extra warm once it’s actually cold. It comes in so many colors and is also on sale for $40 right now! First things first, I’d wear neutral outfits everyday into eternity if my life depended on it. All about that #neutralslife. I’ve realized how important neutrals have been in maturing my style as I’ve entered the working world. A wardrobe based in neutrals provides constant classic outfits that you can mix and match so easily. Investing in quality neutral pieces is never a bad idea for your closet. Choosing neutral hues can give affordable pieces that expensive edge as well!

Basically, neutrals are always a good idea 🙂

FAVORITE PIECES FOR STYLING WINTER NEUTRAL OUTFITS:

While I love the feminine neutrals for spring like blush pink, there’s something special about winter neutrals. I guess it’s the blend of my favorite season and favorite colors that I love! This post is all about the pieces I reach for when styling winter neutral outfits.

TRENCH COAT:

My trench coat is the jack-of-all-trades in my closet. An overachiever if you will. I can always count on it to leave a tailored finish on any look, especially neutral outfits. You can wear a trench in a professional atmosphere but also when you’re on the go. Wear a khaki trench with a white or cream sweater for go-to winter neutral outfits! Mine is from Club Monaco; they have so many trench options. (It’s key to wait for their sales and snag a trench then!)

CREAM SWEATERS:

The best thing about neutrals is that you can wear them with anything, including with other neutrals. It’s always a good idea to have a cream sweater in your closet. My sweater in this post is from my homeland: TJ Maxx. Here’s a similar version! I’ve found quite a few neutral sweaters that I’ve worn relentlessly all season long. There are tons of affordable sweaters at HM this season! I just added this one and this one to the crew.

NEUTRAL WINTER ACCESSORIES:

Whether it’s a scarf, a beret, or a beanie, I want it in a neutral hue, please. When it’s cold you definitely want to be able to wear your scarves, gloves, and hats with every outfit. So pick neutrals! I’ve been loving these chunky scarves and beanies.

CAMEL COAT:

A camel coat falls in the same category as the trench coat; it can do it all. Whether it’s a wrap coat, long wool coat, or shorter car coat, it’ll complete any outfit you’re wearing. Since a camel coat can go with everything, you don’t have to worry about it feeling mismatched with your outfits. I love this blogger’s post about why she always chooses a camel coat!

NUDE PUMPS:

This may be obvious but a pair of nude pumps (& a pair of black pumps) really completes a closet. I adore this pair of pointy-toe pumps because they’re actually comfortable (comes in so many colors!). I also make sure my closet includes pointy-toe booties in a neutral shade for those super cold temps!

All in all, one of the best things about neutrals is mixing them! If you’re new to trying neutral outfits, then I recommend starting with a cream/ivory/white piece as your base. Mix in darker tones for your jacket, pants, or accessories next.

Thanks for reading and I hope these neutral outfits have inspired all of you to embrace #neutralslife! Click here now for more stylish winter trends!

New year, new you? Hmm. If that’s too much pressure, take an easier route by deciding to update your wardrobe essentials for the new year. It’s the perfect time to make your style more personal to you or just up your style game overall!

5 WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR WARDROBE ESSENTIALS

Take a trip:

Well, at least figuratively 🙂 I get some of the best style inspiration when I travel and always find new ways to elevate my wardrobe essentials and closet. But traveling isn’t always the easiest or most affordable! SO…Start gathering outfit inspo from bloggers or accounts that make an update to your style seem effortless and easy. I’m constantly saving pics on Instagram into an ‘Outfits’ folder for future reference and I have an entire board on Pinterest! Gathering inspiration is one of the easiest (& cheapest) ways to update your style for the new year. Search London or Paris street style to get that international inspo.

Lock down your wardrobe essentials’ ideal color palette:

Or at least your color palette for 2018! I’m a lover of neutrals because they’re easy to style and always classic. Sticking to a color palette of 5-7 colors will make your wardrobe essentials more distinct in 2018. This’ll also help you narrow things down while you’re shopping. My “colors” are white, black, cream, tan, blush pink, and blue (denim), and the occasional pop of red!

Add a feminine detail to your wardrobe essentials:

I’ve always centered my style around tailored accents more so than feminine details. But feminine touches like bows and ruffles are going to be making a big statement this season. All of a sudden I’m loving a bow here and a scallop hem there! Feminine tailoring or accents are very classic at their core, so that makes them easy to add to outfits to update your style. I always love to soften an edgier outfit with a pastel hue or ruffled sweater!

Add a new accessory to your wardrobe essentials:

A new accessory can be a low-risk investment in order to update your wardrobe essentials in 2018. I’m so glad I went for this beret for a little style refresh. It’s chic and now it’s actually cold enough outside to wear it! That’ll make it easier to incorporate it into more outfits. Consider a trending statement piece of jewelry (hoop earrings, anyone?) or a belt to add a new dimension to your wardrobe essentials. I always head to Pinterest for outfit inspo when I up level my accessory game.

Go to the tailor:

Yep, that’s right. I recently took all of my jeans (+ a pair of leggings) to the tailor to get hemmed to ankle length. I kept getting frustrated that the hems of my jeans were covering my boots or half-in, half-out of my shoes. Do you know what I mean?! The worst. There will never be a time that the right tailoring won’t be the best thing to do for your wardrobe essentials. If you have pieces that you love but something about the fit just prevents you from wearing it – go to the tailor! That way you can count on the fit of your staple pieces to be the best foundation for tons of outfits.

So the second I write a post about what to wear when it’s a warmer fall day, the temperatures start to feel like they should in November. Am I saying I made it colder in Dallas? Maybe! Now that we’re bundling up this week, I thought it would be a good time to mention the 4 winter coat styles that you really need in your closet.

4 WINTER COAT STYLES FOR YOUR WARDROBE

These winter coat styles will truly complete your closet and be a great foundation for your winter wardrobe.

1. Trench Coat: Like I mentioned in last week’s post, I found this trench coat on sale at Club Monaco a few weeks ago. It has been a great addition to my closet because I can wear it in a lot of different ways. It keeps me warm, but I also can throw it on when it’s rainy out. The perfect top layer for all of your fall or winter outfits!

2. Quilted or Puffer Coat: I do have a quilted coat that I love, but I definitely want to add a puffer coat to my winter coat lineup. Both of these are great coats that are super versatile for your everyday life. I wear mine over my workout clothes on my way to a class. But puffer jackets (especially in metallics!) are on the horizon for winter trends (want to see a post on this? answer my poll on IG stories!); I’m seeing them styled with crop flare jeans and sock boots!

3. Wool Wrap Coat: Here’s a throwback to my post-bangs phase, first of all. Second of all, every gal needs a wrap coat in her winter coat arsenal. The wrap style adds a chic edge to your look automatically, and it can really elevate your more classic outfits. Not to mention, wool is really warm and you can’t consider your winter coat collection complete without a wool coat.

4. Car Coat: Is this a new one to anybody? For the longest time I was loving this style of coat on other bloggers or people I’d see out and about. I just didn’t know what to call it! It wasn’t until I saw this coat that I knew the right name: a car coat. It’s a tailored winter coat option that’s a bit of a lighter coat layer to pop over an outfit for the office or if you’re on the go. I just snagged this one for $49 from HM!

Lately I’ve been looking at coats and sweaters, and I got overwhelmed with how many options there are. But if you know me, you know that I’m always one to hunt down the right fashion investment piece. When it comes to fall fashion investment pieces, I like to first search for the right fit and then decide based on the versatility of the piece. If you’re going to invest more in a piece, you better make sure that it’s something you’ll wear over and over again with multiple outfits.

With the temperatures officially dropping where I live, it felt like a good time to discuss how I pick my fall fashion investment pieces and which ones earned their spot in the top five.

  1. Burberry Quilted Coat: This was my Christmas present last year, and I have worn it so much. I wear it over workout clothes, formal clothes, work clothes etc. These coats are built to last, and I know I’ll be wearing mine for years and years.
  2. Stuart Weitzman Over the Knee Boots: These were a super sale score and the result of impressive patience on my part. After going through multiple lookalike pairs of these boots, I decided that, instead of spending my money on similar boots, I wanted to save up to get the real deal. And boy has it been worth it. These guys are durable and so flattering.
  3. Leather jacket/Suede moto jacket: If you read this caption on my Instagram, you’d know that I used to be scared of wearing a leather jacket. That fear came from not really knowing how to wear one. Now I wear one with so many outfits and my closet wouldn’t be complete without it. It took finding the jacket with the right fit for my body type (it’s best to go try on in person) and some research for inspiration on Pinterest.
  4. Trench coat: Are you starting to notice an outerwear theme here? Good! The key to a fall closet with a solid foundation lies in your coats and jackets. You don’t need very many, but you have to have the styles and cuts that fit you the best and blend with your style. A trench coat had been on my list for quite some time. When Club Monaco was offering 25% off, it was the right moment to strike. A trench is a classic addition to your wardrobe that’s great for warmth and even during rainy weather.
  5. Cashmere sweater: Like I mentioned in this post, I wanted to add two signature sweater styles in cashmere to my wardrobe. With birthday gift cards, I made the decision to invest in a turtleneck and a pullover for this season and many seasons to come. When choosing a fall investment piece, make sure to invest in styles that are regularly in style year over year.

While fall fashion investment pieces are indeed, investments, I still avoid paying full price for these items. There are too many sale opportunities that come around; it’s all about being patient. For some of my investment pieces, I’ve used gift cards from birthdays, waited for Black Friday deals, or taken advantage of discount opportunities in order to add these items into my wardrobe. I love nice things, but I’m a bargain hunter/price comparer at my core!

Speaking of Black Friday, there’s about to be some amazing content released on my site to get you in the planning mood THIS WEEK. From scoring deals on wardrobe essentials (like fall investment pieces) to knocking out your holiday shopping before December 1st, I’ll have you covered here on Never Without Lipstick. Everything you’ll need will be on the ‘Holiday Shop‘ tab at the top of my site.

Fall Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe

Fall Trends to Add to Your Wardrobe 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

Whether the Texas temperatures want to believe it or not, fall has arrived and so have fall trends. My birthday is in September, so I’m an autumn baby and my need for fall temps, fall colors, fall textures affects me on a molecular level. Not to mention that I’m bombarded with inspiration left and right with NYFW 2017 going down right now. I just had to share the newest fall trends that I’m loving and that I actually think I can add into my wardrobe (and so can you!).

You’ll find pieces below that you can shop to start making your fall wardrobe the hottest it’s ever been!

(Pssst, don’t want to lose this list of fall trends and outfit inspo? Pin the pic below and you won’t have to!)

RUFFLES:

Ruffles are making an appearance everywhere this fall season and you can find them on dresses, blouses, even on sweatshirts (ew to that, though). What I love most about the ruffle trend is that it can be dressed up and down easily and it’ll flow seamlessly from season to season.

How to wear it: If you’re looking to add an incredibly feminine and elegant touch to your fall outfits, look no further. Pair a ruffle sleeve sweater with an a-line mini skirt and booties for a ruffled weekend casual look. Want to wear ruffles but not be too girly? Then pair a ruffle blouse with jeans and sneakers or a ruffle hem dress with a studded bootie.

HIGH COLLARS:

Pride and Prejudice called and Jane Austen wants her collars back. Sorry, Jane, I can’t come to the phone right now. High Victorian collars are here to stay this fall. This might just be one of the fall trends that I’m most excited about. A statement collar takes your outfit to an ultra chic level and beyond and I’m not complaining one bit.

How to wear it: Let a high collar blouse do the talking and pair it with classic tailored pieces like a fitted trouser legging and a velvet slide. A high collar can also be a fall trend to bring into your office style because it’s conservative and professional while still elevating your look for the fall season.

MOODY FLORALS:

Florals for fall? Actually groundbreaking. And this season the florals are just as moody as Miranda Priestly herself. Think romantic floral tapestries or shiny brocade florals that you might see in a museum or medieval castle. You’ll be seeing very rich, cool tones like deep purples, charcoal grays, and dark magenta pinks instead of your standard mustard or brown hues.

How to wear it: Of all of these fall trends, florals are always going to be an easy way to add interest to your outfits. If you want to be an over-achiever and kill two trends with one stone, go for a high-collared (maybe even with a tie-neck?) floral blouse and tuck it into a pair of dark vintage wash high-waisted jeans; top it off with a kitten heel to really seal the deal.

RED:

Cue the Taylor Swift song immediately. (Oh sorry, the *old* Taylor song…) Red is, no joke, the red hot trend for fall. Usually I gravitate towards bordeaux or burgundy hues every autumn, but this season we’re talking candy apple and cherry reds. As an addict to neutrals, I usually veer away from any colors that aren’t somewhat reminiscent of the earth or dirt, but red is such a classic color that it’s probably the easiest color to incorporate into your neutral fall wardrobe. I got this bag as a Christmas present last year and you better believe that I’m toting it around nonstop now that red is THE fall color. See how I styled my red bag here!

How to wear it: Other than red nails or red lips (read how to apply a bold lip here), think about pairing some red pumps with your favorite blue skinny jeans for casual Friday at the office. And if you’re not ready for an all red ensemble, go for red accents like a track pant with a red stripe down the leg – this will have a slimming effect on your legs and keep your outfit on trend.

CHECKS & PLAIDS:

Not only are plaids and checks hot on the fall trend menu but so are pant suits. Keep it business professional this season with plaid trousers and perhaps a double breasted checked blazer. One of my all-time favorite bloggers to follow has been wearing this plaid blazer nonstop and I seriously can’t get enough. This trend is pretty much like introducing a new neutral into your wardrobe, so feel free to style it with everything from your go-to shirt dress or a lace cami for a nighttime look.

How to wear it: Just like I mentioned above, I wore a lace cami under my Zara checked blazer last weekend, and I knew right away that it was an outfit I’d be repeating (check it out here). Add in a pair of black distressed skinnies and a suede block heel sandal to keep things classic with a cool-girl vibe.

P.S. – Some trends from last season that are here to stay for round two are:
