My 2019 Word of the Year & Weekly Planning Template

My 2019 Word of the Year & Weekly Planning Template 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

Happy New Year, lovies! I always love the fresh start we get in January because I spend lots of time writing lists and planning goals for the year. Who else’s Type A tendencies are flaring right now?! Right there with ya. Anyway…I decided to go with a word of the year this year for my “resolution” and this word including me creating a weekly planning template that I’m sharing with y’all! So I know you’re wondering, “what’s your word?” Drum roll please…DISCIPLINE.

Top Dallas life and style blog, Never Without Lipstick shares the Weekly Planning Template they use to stay on top of things.

That may initially sound like a bit of an intense or ~scary~ word of the year but that’s not how I’m thinking of it! I want to be more disciplined when it comes to the blog, my weekly skincare, apartment chores, exercise, etc. When I have a routine to follow, I’m more productive and more likely to make things happen. That’s why I set up this weekly planning template to lay out what I want to achieve each week and to stay on track. I also included an Other section on the weekly planning template because life happens, right? There will be some weeks that I don’t exercise at the same time one day or grocery shop on Sunday and not Saturday, etc.

If you’re also looking to build a weekly or daily routine, feel free to use this weekly planning template. I pre-filled each day with different categories, but you can switch those out to fit your needs! Just copy and paste the weekly planning template into your Google Drive, a Word Doc, or Notes on your phone – you name it! We’re all in this together (and yes, I’m mentally envisioning Zac Efron after writing that 😉 ).

My Other 2019 Resolutions:

  • Stick to and maintain the schedule I’ve made in my weekly planning template
  • Get laser hair removal
  • Change all of my hangers to the same color velvet hanger
  • Read at least 1 book a month (taking recommendations – comment below!)
  • Take riding lessons again (I rode horses for 10 years of my life and miss riding SO much!)
  • Take weekly meditative yoga classes
  • Travel Wish List: Bahamas, New York, and Paris

What are your resolutions or plans? Or do you have a word of the year? I want to know – share with me in the comments below!

There’s little I love more than an amazing Amazon find and, according to the numbers, it looks like y’all agree!

THIS MONTH’S TOP 10 AMAZON FAVORITES:

  • Fuzzy Pullover: The minute this pullover came in I knew it would be on my forever list of Amazon favorites. It’s so cozy and actually really warm. I’ve slept in it, worn it over my workout clothes, and thrown it on for running errands. I ordered a large but definitely could have gone with a medium as it’s only slightly on the side of too oversized for me. I’ve also washed it a few times now and it hasn’t lost its softness or changed in its fit! The best and coziest $32 I’ve ever spent!

  • Ribbed T-Shirt (short sleeve & long sleeve): I raved about this tee on my Insta Stories on Friday, and the obsession is still going strong. These tees are the perfect wardrobe staple and they’re both under $20! They’re so easy to tuck in, perfect fall/winter layering pieces
  • Goyard Card Holder Dupe: This came in last week and I was pleasantly surprised with the quality! This is the perfect thing to have to throw into smaller purses or just to carry on the go. It’s a pretty dang good designer dupe for just $20!
  • Gold 8×10 Frames: Did you catch a peek at my newest additions to my apartment decor this weekend on my Insta Stories? If you missed it, you can get a look below! • Waffle Knit Henley Tunic: This tunic is so perfect and comfy for traveling or running errands. I got the medium and it’s the perfectly oversized fit.
  • Stainless Steel Reusable Straws: On the mornings that I make smoothies, I love having these straws to use to take them to go. They’re easy to clean, too!
  • Inflammatone Supplement: My co-worker told me about this supplement and it has been life changing. It’s a completely natural supplement with all natural ingredients that reduce inflammation in your body. It has completely eliminated my bloating. Yeah…you read that correctly. It’s a bit of an indulgence but totally worth it if you struggle with bloating regularly!! I’d recommend that you start with taking two a day and then up it from there just depending on the results.

Life After College | What I’ve Learned One Year Later

Life After College | What I’ve Learned One Year Later 800 1200 neverwithoutlipstick

Technically, it’s been a little over a year since I graduated from college, but it’s my birthday today which always makes me want to be reflective over the past year. Life after college has been both challenging and rewarding at the same time. I feel like I’ve grown so much more in this past year than I did in the four years of actual college believe it or not! I’ve been thinking about where I was mentally at this time last year and there really have been a lot of changes that I can see in myself.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED IN LIFE AFTER COLLEGE:

Everybody is uncertain about what’s next

I can’t tell you how many times my close friends and I have talked about how we just don’t know what the heck we’re doing/want to do with our lives next. In college, you always knew what was coming up: next course to take, next test, next grade to get, etc. but that certainty doesn’t exist anymore once you graduate. While having your first job or being in grad school may *seem* certain or structured, you’re all of a sudden thinking about the ~rest of your life~. What do you want it to look like? Are you in the right place/job/city to get to where you want to go? Where DO I want to go? You get the picture. What’s amazing about feeling like this is that everybody else is in the same dang boat. Growing up wouldn’t be a thing if we knew all the answers, but that sure would be nice!

Here a few things that I do when I get freaky about the future:

  • Talk to the friends that are a little bit older than me: They’ve been in this headspace before and have been out of college a pinch longer than I have. It’s so nice to have someone say, “I totally get what you’re going through.” They help me to translate my worries into words and concrete actions I can take to feel less freaked out about my life’s plan.
  • Be honest with myself about my career: I know deep down that I eventually want to run my own business and have the freedom that comes with self-employment. Knowing and accepting this about myself helps me to frame my plans for the next couple of years in what I need to learn and do to get to self-employment at some point. It also keeps me going on the tough days at work because I know that I’m learning skills and lessons that will prepare me in the future as a business owner.
  • Write out some generic goals:  Since I definitely don’t know all of my life goals at this point, I’ve been trying to focus on shorter term time frames with my goals instead. I’m also keeping them generic because I know that when I get too into the nitty gritty I can overdo it and end up beating myself up for not meeting unrealistic expectations. I’ve started setting generic goals for the month ahead of me like finances, books, or working towards getting a car (inspo from Molly On The Move’s post!). I write out a few bullet points beneath each goal that are easily actionable steps toward that goal for the month. As the months go by and you re-evaluate your goals, themes will start to pop up that can help you get clarity on what you’re prioritizing over and over again. That could lead you to knowing what your dream job is or what a passion of yours is! The process just helps me to take things one step at a time and *attempt* to calm down about not knowing exactly how the future will unfold.

YOU have to take responsibility over your health & wellbeing

You might’ve just read that and thought, “yeah, duh.” But hear me out! I think in college we take for granted that we’re young and very healthy. I know that I pushed aside feelings of my worsening anxiety in college because I kept thinking that I shouldn’t feel this way. I was in college – it was supposed to be the best and happiest time of my life! But that mentality led to stubbornness and shame when it came to admitting I didn’t feel 100% physically or mentally. I really had to get over that this year…

A few weeks after graduation, some of my blood work from a routine checkup really alarmed my doctor and he recommended that I have an expensive (and scary) procedure within 2-3 months of that appointment. After the initial shock of learning this, I had to kick it into high gear to hunt down answers about what was up with my body and my health. That meant finding and scheduling appointments with other specialists and doctors that could help me figure everything out. In the end, I learned that I have an autoimmune condition that was causing the issues with my blood work results. Luckily, it’s easily treatable, but I would have never known had I just remained scared about those results.

I am beyond grateful for the doctors who have helped me along this journey. It gave me a crash course in being more aware of my body/how I’m feeling and to not wait for something scary to happen to take charge of my health. As annoying, time-consuming, and oftentimes frightening it can be to go through something like this, there really is no greater feeling than taking the necessary steps to be as healthy as you should be. Like my mom always says to me, “What’s the alternative?!” And she’s right! Again, it’s hard to admit when we’re not feeling our best, but on the other side of that shame, there’s maximum healthiness and happiness to be had 🙂

Change comes from action, not thought

I could only think “ugh” to myself writing this point but, unfortunately, it’s very, very true. Ugh again! I spent months just talking and talking about changes I wanted to see in my life but never did anything about it. Why? Because I was (am still more often than not) scared that I’d be a huge failure and make a wrong choice for my life. I’m a Libra, so I can be very indecisive and spend countless days and hours evaluating different decisions and trying to predict which would have the better outcome. But the only thing I’m doing is wasting time on taking action to get things done! Over this past year in life after college, I’ve had to try very hard to be brave, push through my fear, and take the actions I need to to see changes. It’s always tough for me to move forward on something when I’m scared, but so many more positives have come from me taking action than what would’ve happened had I done nothing at all!

The journey is the destination

We’ve arrived at my final point a.k.a. the hardest lesson for me to learn in life after college and maybe in life in general. I had never realized how I perceived happiness until I read a few books (particularly this one) this year that talked about how some people treat happiness as a destination. A strange thought, right? There has always been a checklist of life accomplishments in my head that I needed to address before I thought I could be or deserved to be happy, so to say. I never understood until now that if you’re not happy along the journey, you’re never going to be! There’s always something else to put on the list to accomplish.

What I’ve learned in life after college is that happiness and joy happen in moments. This was something that was initially hard for me to accept. I had the misperception that everything needed to be happy and perfect all the time. And if it wasn’t, then I thought I was doing something wrong and I’d write out another list of goals to achieve to get me closer to eventual happiness later in life. I’m working really hard on staying more aware in these moments of joy to see how I’ve grown, how I’d like to grow more, and what I’ve learned. I’m now looking at my journey as the beautiful path I’m taking that leads me to these happy moments that overwhelm me with gratitude and love or leave me feeling so proud of myself for being brave and pushing through my fears.

Thanks for reading along if you’ve made it this far – I know this was a longer post! I’m so happy to have a place to share and open up about my journey in life after college and what I’m learning. Any other recent college graduates out there that with any more tips or lessons about life after college? Please share – I’d love to hear and chat!

Head here to read last year’s birthday post and learn 23 things you might not know about me 😉

Style blogger Ashley Deatherage shares her 2018 New Years resolutions | goal setting, 2018 planning, new years resolutions - New Years Resolutions + A Look Back at 2017 by popular Dallas style blogger Never Without Lipstick

Happy New Year! I couldn’t be more excited for what 2018 has in store for all of you as well as this little corner of the internet. And with the new year come New Years resolutions, right?! I wanted to share mine with you to give you an idea of what to expect for Never Without Lipstick this year or maybe inspire you if you haven’t made any New Years resolutions quite yet. If you have set your resolutions, let me know in the comments below or over on Instagram 🙂 I’d love to know your goals and vision for 2018!

A LOOK BACK AT 2017

In an effort to be as real and honest as possible with all of you, I feel like I need to start by saying that 2017 wasn’t the easiest year. There were a few big changes and transitions that tested me in ways that I didn’t expect.

Graduating from college and transitioning into working life two weeks later was not without its challenges. I was navigating moving back to Dallas, my first full-time job, and just the struggles that come as you enter post-college life. If you’ve gone through it, you know what I mean! You’re finding your identity in (maybe) a new city and trying to build a new community around you of friends. It can be tough and lonely at times, but I have been so grateful for the friends I’ve made over the past 7 months. They have been such a great support to me as they’ve been through this same transition and have amazing advice. It also has been such a comfort to hear that my close friends from high school and college are all going through the same thing.

Something that I can’t emphasize enough from what I’ve learned this year is to go to the doctor/get your bloodwork done if you’re really feeling off. From January until May of 2017, I was just not feeling like myself. Actually I was feeling like the worst version of myself. I felt so lethargic, sluggish, and all I could muster up the energy to do was make it to class and watch TV in my bed. It wasn’t until I had a checkup in May and got bloodwork done that I found out my B12 was severely low. This explained EVERYTHING. A B12 deficiency can cause all of the symptoms that I was experiencing, and I’m so mad I let myself feel like that for so long before going to the doctor! I had to administer B12 shots to myself (yes, ow!), but as my levels got back to normal, I was amazed at how I felt like a new person. If this happens to you, don’t ignore it like I did – GO to the doctor!

Like I said, there were tough times this year. But, of course, there were amazing moments this year that are definitely influencing my 2018 New Years resolutions.

My Favorite Moments of 2017:

Moving back to Dallas

I went to college in Austin (Hook em horns!) and absolutely loved the city. But it just never felt like home to me like Dallas does. I’m so grateful that I get to be in my hometown that I love and be close to my family.

Going cruelty-free

When I found out that Nars was going to start testing its products on animals in order to sell it in Asia, I was devastated. I had bought many Nars products and raved about them on my blog, so for them to begin testing on animals went deeply against some of my core values. I knew I had to officially make a change in the beauty and skincare products I was using. I’ve learned so much over the past 6 months of being a cruelty-free shopper and I love that I have the opportunity to use my voice for a cause that I am deeply passionate about.

Discovering the Plant Paradox diet

Some of you may not know this, but I have struggled with food allergies over the past 5 years. After finding out I was gluten and dairy intolerant in 2013, I have been on a long road of finding out what my sensitivities are. I thought I had addressed everything when I eliminated dairy and gluten from my diet, but I kept having issues/reactions to things, especially last year. It wasn’t until my doctor recommended I look into The Plant Paradox that I then finally found a diet that did not cause inflammation or a reaction for me. It has changed the way that I understand food, and I’m very grateful that I’ve found a solution that works for me and my body. (If you’re interested in more info, I’d recommend reading the book or doing a Google search about a lectin-free diet!)

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

Addressing my perfectionism.

I am a recovering perfectionist. Anyone else? I never knew that perfectionism could be a mindset that could be so destructive. Yes, it definitely drives me to push myself harder, pay close attention to detail, and want to achieve bigger and bigger goals. But it also holds me back and sometimes paralyzes me in the worst of ways. My perfectionism has reared its ugly head over the past 6 months when it came to my blog.

I’m sure you’ve read this everywhere and I won’t bore you with details but the massive changes in the Instagram algorithm threw me for a big loop this year. All of a sudden my content was only being shown to 5% of my followers and I was maybe getting half of the likes/engagement I’d had before. Instead of pivoting and just accepting the new changes for what they were, I fell into a perfectionistic spiral about my entire blog. I no longer felt like I was capable of creating the brand/community I envisioned because I felt like no one even cared about the content I was creating since they weren’t engaging with it on Instagram. This may seem silly to some but Instagram is a necessary evil when it comes to running a business like this. To have such an integral part of my business change in such a drastic way was frightening.

In 2018, I am going to be very diligent about combating my perfectionistic thoughts and behaviors. They have no place or purpose in my life. Over the years I have worked with life coaches and therapists that have helped me identify and develop tactics to combat these behaviors/thoughts. If you feel like you might also be suffering of perfectionism and you need tactics to change your behavior, I definitely recommend first seeing a specialist. Then I recommend reading blogs like this one; it has opened my eyes to other ways perfectionism is affecting me and gives me actionable tips to change my perfectionistic habits. This won’t always be the easiest goal to achieve this year but I know it’ll be SO worth it!

Committing to moving forward with belief in myself and positivity.

As cheesy as this is, I need this year’s motto to be along the lines of, “Just Do It.” As you read above, my perfectionism can paralyze me when it comes to moving forward/making decisions with my blog. I have big ideas and aspirations for the brand I want to create but my fear of not being perfect or of failure prevents me from even trying. Along with addressing these perfectionistic behaviors/thoughts, I’m no longer going to let myself be paralyzed about making my dreams a reality. I’m going to commit to believing in myself and move FORWARD above all else.

Making my skincare a top priority.

Oh man, I’m really excited about this New Years resolution! I have struggled with acne since sixth grade and have been on a number of different antibiotics, tried all the topicals, etc. But I recently read that cystic/hormonal acne (which I have :/ ) comes from more than just the skin; it’s about what’s happening in the body as a whole. In an effort to stop having to use antibiotics, I want to cure my acne from the inside out. This’ll include keeping up an anti-inflammatory diet. I also want to use as much clean/natural beauty products as I can because I no longer feel like the harsh chemicals in other treatments are what I want to be putting on my skin. I’m going to be tracking my skincare in a journal to see which products I’m using and how it’s treating my symptoms. I will, of course, keep all of you updated on my findings along the way!

2018 Habits I Want to Implement:

  • Moisturize after every shower – no more dry skin in 2018!
  • Commit to waking up and going to bed at the same time Monday – Friday
  • Read 1-2 books a month
  • Write out 5 positive affirmations every day

Sorry for the LONG post, but if you made it this far, thank you for reading! I’m so excited about these New Years Resolutions, and I’m going to be doing a monthly check-in on each of them to hold myself accountable. Stay tuned!

5 Email Newsletters You Need in Your Inbox

5 Email Newsletters You Need in Your Inbox 150 150 neverwithoutlipstick

Lifestyle blogger, Ashley Deatherage of Never Without Lipstick, shares 6 email newsletters for women that deserve a spot in your inbox | Never Without Lipstick | dallas blog, lifestyle blog, style blogger, healthy lifestyle, lifestyle inspiration, flatlay photography

Do you ever just go through and delete emails on your phone for what feels like days when you wake up? And instead of just going through the unsubscribe process, you just do the same thing every day? I’m the exact same way. But my inbox is prime real estate and every email that comes in should serve me in a positive way! That’s why I recently made the move to first do a deep clean of my inbox (I still had emails from 2014…) and then think hard about what I wanted in my inbox each day.

These 5 email newsletters have given me good advice, kept me up to date on the news, broadened my skincare knowledge, and so much more.

  • The Skimm: Now most of you already have this email newsletter popping into your inbox everyday, but it’s still worth mentioning! I love how I can get a quick, succinct synopsis of what’s going on in the world right from my email. It’s usually the first thing I read when I sit down at the office, and I feel like I’m leading a more informed lifestyle. They also link out to other great articles for further reading so that you can get more information about issues you’re more interested in. And the writers are genius; I giggle as I’m reading on the regular.
  • Into the Gloss: I’ve mentioned how often I visit this site before, but I really swear by their articles and the expertise that’s shared on ITG. Are you a big fan of Glossier? Then you’ll really love ITG emails. Tons of celebs and other beauty experts share their go-to products and different estheticians will share how to keep your skin matte, for example. I’ve made sure to bookmark this article and this article because they’re crazy helpful. They also talk hair and makeup, so it’s basically your one stop online for all the beauty guru tips and tricks.
  • Smart Twenties: I came across this website a few weeks ago, and I’ve been so blown away by this girl’s emails. She writes a lot about perfectionism and overcoming it which is something I always need to learn more about. I call myself a recovering perfectionist and Sam’s emails and blog posts have seriously helped me to identify and reroute my perfectionistic thinking. I’m definitely considering her 7-day challenge for perfectionists. She also writes about productivity and career tips which are particularly important to me now that I’m working full-time while also running a blog. I highly recommend having her emails in your inbox for quick life hacks and how to make the most of each day.
  • & Other Stories: For the most part, I always opt out of a brand’s emails when they ask if I’d like newsletter updates during checkout. But the emails from & Other Stories are always worth the read. This store also has a special place in my heart because I first discovered it while studying abroad in Paris. Their editorial team must be made up of pure geniuses because the emails are always so well curated and well styled. They share a different trend or editorial story every day with perfectly shot photography and links to related products. If you’re looking for good style or outfit inspiration, this is where you need to start. You also get a promo code when you sign up for their emails – win, win! One of my favorite party dresses is actually from & Other Stories!
  • Cupcakes & Cashmere: It wasn’t until my co-worker told me about these emails that I knew what I had been missing. I had no clue that the girl behind the Cupcakes & Cashmere clothing line was such a precious angel. Seriously follow her on IG – she has THE cutest jewelry ever, it’s all so dainty and delicate (I want it all!). But back to her emails. Emily always shares fun looks into her life as well as links to cute pieces or products she’s found on the internet over the week. She’ll also share blog posts from the week, and I always find that her posts are either interesting and on topics you wouldn’t think of or really informative.

Speaking of email newsletters: are you signed up to receive Never Without Lipstick email newsletters in your inbox?! You can get my new posts sent straight to your email where you can read the post right from your inbox or shop the post details right away! Sign yourself up and then tell everybody else to sign up, too!

Yesterday, I had my 23rd birthday. I can’t believe it! Over the past year, I graduated from college, got my first full-time job, moved home to Dallas, and have continued to work on my passion, my blog. I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned this year and I’m beyond excited for what the future holds.

I thought I would put something different up on the blog as a way for you to get to know me better and maybe learn a thing or two about me that you might not have known!

  1. I won the spelling bee in 8th grade and went all the way to the Dallas County Bee before I got beaten out by a lot of homeschooled kids. I lost on the word ‘backstein’ – ugh.
  2. My first concert was Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus & the Jonas Brothers and it’s still the best concert I’ve ever been to. (I didn’t meet a Jonas (Joe) until my junior year of college – still haven’t met Nick, though!)
  3. I rode horses for 10 years of my life and had two horses, Umberto and Boomer.
  4. I went to an all-girls high school (shaving my legs regularly still hasn’t become a habit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).
  5. I’ve broken two bones: my big toe and my shoulder.
  6. My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
  7. The first CD I ever owned was one of Christina Aguilera’s albums – ‘Genie in a bottle,’ anyone?
  8. I describe myself as an F-list Spotify star – I have a playlist with 36 followers!
  9. I took singing lessons in 8th grade because I thought I would be on Disney Channel and meet Nick Jonas – oops. (Also was a #bingewatcher of That’s So Raven, Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, The Amanda Show, Spongebob…I credit my weird sense of humor to these shows :P).
  10. I love to do accents/impersonations – my favorite is an Australian accent or any of Kristen Wiig’s characters on SNL.
  11. I planned my blog in secret for 6 months before launching it.
  12. I’m 5’7 but wish I was taller!
  13. I studied abroad in Paris for three months in the summer of 2016, and I’d say my French is relatively decent from that – oui?
  14. I didn’t learn to ride a bike until right before my freshman year of high school (safe to say I still avoid riding them today).
  15. I recently made the switch to start using all cruelty-free beauty and skincare products after I found out about Nars starting to do animal testing.
  16. My all-time, most favorite clothing brands are Madewell and Vince.
  17. My top two favorite bloggers are Emma Hill and Kathleen Barnes of Carrie Bradshaw Lied.
  18. I was scared of doorknobs when I was little because I thought they were eyeballs, so I’d open every door when I was watching TV so that I couldn’t see any knobs – I was weird!
  19. I wore headgear for a year before getting my braces off…#hot, #aestethic.
  20. My mom raised us watching British period pieces, so by default, my favorite movie is Pride and Prejudice, but the PBS version. The Keira Knightley version is NOTHING in comparison to the PBS version; we consider it an illegitimate version in my house.
  21. I’m definitely an introvert and I consider myself pretty shy in big social situations.
  22. I was a Chi Omega at the University of Texas at Austin (any sisters reading along?!).
  23. My eyes are brown, but one of my eyes is much more hazel green than the other, so I like to say I have two differently colored eyes. After I cry or if I cry when I laugh, you can really see how green it is!

Ever since starting my full-time job in May, I’ve found it harder and harder to get myself on a consistent fitness and diet plan. I feel like I get the best workouts in in the mornings, but I find that I want to sleep in more often than get up and exercise. And if I put off my workout to the evening, there’s a 99% chance that it won’t happen. When I’m not working out regularly or on a consistent schedule, then I’m less motivated to be eating a healthy, balanced diet. This all leads to an overall feeling of sluggishness and me being unhappy!

Lately I’ve gotten so down on myself for not sticking to my workout and diet plans that I’ve been motivated to stick to 5 easy ways to kickstart my fitness and healthy eating plan back into action!

Here’s what I’ve been doing that has helped re-energize me:

  1. Opt for a workout outline instead of a strict schedule: As a Type A person, I live by my routines and function best when I have a routine in place that I can stick to. But this can have its drawbacks because I’ll feel really guilty if I bail on something I had on my to-do list a.k.a. my workouts. To avoid this shame train, I now set out a goal outline of what I want to achieve with my workouts each week. I like to alternate week to week with 3 days of cardio and 2 days of strength training or vice versa. This helps me to better achieve my workout goals that I can accomplish on any day of the week. This outline is better for me than setting workouts for specific days of the week and then feeling guilt when I had to readjust a workout time.
  2. Determine a fitness budget that works for you and take action: Now that I have a big girl job, budgeting is the name of the game. I tried things like StudioHop or memberships at studios around Dallas, but I just ended up cancelling classes more than I ever went to them which just ended up costing me more money. I couldn’t afford that drain on my bank account anymore, so that’s when I turned to my Pinterest app to research circuits and other workouts that looked challenging but feasible for my fitness level. Not to mention, these workouts are FREE and there are so many at my fingertips. I don’t have to drive anywhere or go to a gym if I don’t want to! I’m pretty gym-shy, so I prefer to workout at home with free weights etc. I really love the PopSugar circuits – they’re so easy to save to your phone and give you a good workout in an hour or less. Follow my fitness Pinterest board here so that you can check out which workouts I’m loving! For me, I knew that I had to take my fitness into my own hands at a cost that made sense for my bank account. I recommend really thinking about what you can afford and what you can commit to and then taking action to make that fitness plan a reality.
  3. Grab some B12: Earlier during the summer, my doctor informed me that my bloodwork had shown that my B12 levels were extremely low. This explained a lot of symptoms I’d been having for many months: extreme fatigue, irritability, feeling excessively lethargic. I just felt like I couldn’t motivate myself to do too much other than sleep and go to class (this was in May so I had just graduated and had felt these symptoms while at school). Once I started actively treating my B12 deficiency, I noticed a major difference in my energy levels and my motivation to exercise and cook healthy meals. You might not need as intense of a dosage as I did, but a B12 lozenge or pill every week or couple of days might do you some good to get motivated to get active in building your weekly fitness plan.
  4. Try eliminating 1-2 inflammatory foods for 7 or 10 days: For the most part, I feel like I am able to stay in shape (as much as possible, lol) by eating a healthy diet. I have lots of food allergies due to a stomach issue I had a few years ago that compromised my stomach’s ability to process various foods. I’m currently on a lectin-free diet per my doctor’s recommendation and I really have seen great results from the recommended food list. Google the Plant Paradox if you want more info! There’s a lot to be said for removing inflammatory foods from your diet, even for a short time. You’ll see positive results almost immediately – trust me. Is there a specific food that you’ve noticed upsets your stomach or leaves you feeling heavy or bloated? Like wheat, dairy, or grains? Try avoiding that food for a week or 10 days to see how things improve and how you start to feel. Without inflammation in your system, you’ll feel healthier and more energized to workout.
  5. Update your workout playlist: There are FEW things in this life that get me more amped than a bumpin’ playlist. Music can seriously make or break a workout in my opinion. Put together a playlist of your favorite hype jams (or follow a workout playlist pre-made on Spotify) and try to only listen to that playlist when you workout. If you listen to it all the time, your love for the song will start to fade and you’ll potentially associate it with that set of lunges you always struggle to get through at the end of a circuit. It’s also important to invest in a great pair of headphones! The team at Sudio Sweden recently sent me the Vasa Bla wireless model, and I’ve really been enjoying them. Working out with headphones connected to your phone just doesn’t make sense anymore if you need to move around a lot! You can manage the volume and pause/play right from the buttons on the headphones, and they go nicely into your ear while the short cord just loops behind your neck. If you’d like 15% off a pair of your own, use the code NVRWOLIPSTICK.

Are there ways that you motivate yourself to stay active and eating healthy? I’d love to know in the comments below!

THANK YOU!

It’s seriously hard for me to believe that it has been an entire year since I launched Never Without Lipstick. I can still so vividly remember sitting in my room at the sorority house making plans for my blog in secret. Thinking of a name, figuring out how to set up a website, reading about WordPress, securing social media handles – all of it was only a year ago?! Why in secret, you ask? Well, young grasshopper, deciding to launch a blog/become a “blogger” isn’t the easiest choice. Wanting to start a blog was something so unbelievably personal to me because it was something I am so deeply passionate about. And when you care about something that much, you get protective of it and it just makes sense to keep elements of the process to yourself to prevent any doubts or questioning comments from seeping in. On the other hand, mentioning that you want to start a blog can seem silly to some or self-indulgent because of all of the photos you’ll end up posting of yourself. That’s understandable, but I sure am glad that the influencer industry has grown to the point where many more are viewing it as a viable and booming business.

Again, I’m in shock. Not only that I had the wherewithal to launch this bad boy but getting to watch NWL grow over this year has been the #1 most challenging and even more rewarding adventure I’ve ever been on. There are small victories that I have celebrated over this year for things that I never thought I would be celebrate. But when you put yourself out there with a blog, every little growth point matters and really means something.

But none of those victories would have EVER been possible without YOU. There aren’t enough words of thanks for me to express what it means to me for you to read my posts, like my posts on Insta, or even buy something that I’ve recommended on the blog!! Thank you a million times over for following along and continuing your support of NWL.

Keep on reading below for an update on what’s next for me after graduating!!

LIFE UPDATE:

As some of you might have seen, I have officially graduated from college. What?! I am also in shock from this. I have to be a big kid now and have a job and adult full-time. Am I ready?! We’re all about to find out! I will be taking a position at a company here in Dallas called rewardStyle. It is the one and only and first of its kind content monetization network for digital publishers and influencers. I am beyond thrilled to get to call this company my home because it has revolutionized the blogging industry and continues to disrupt what’s expected. Keep looking to this company to make shopping the content of your favorite blogger’s easier and easier. I will make sure to keep everyone updated via Snapchat (@nvrwolipstick) and Insta stories on my working girl adventures. It’s only going to get more #lit from here!

Thank you AGAIN from the bottom of my heart for supporting NWL and being part of this fam! I love you all dearly!

Ways to Make Extra Cash This Summer 1200 800 neverwithoutlipstick

Make Extra Cash During the Summer/Never Without Lipstick/making money, summer money, summer money earning tips, money tips

Summer, summer, summer (if that’s not triggering a High School Musical mem for you then I don’t know you). I must have a hard time transitioning into having lots of free time during the summer because my brain is always running at 1000 miles an hour with things to fill my time as the summer starts. And something that’s always at the top of my list is to make some extra $$$. Even though I’m a working human now with a ~job~, I still am doing some of these things for extra cash! These are my tried and true ways to get some extra spending money or to add to your savings.

  1. Sell your clothes: I regularly prune my closet every two months or at the beginning of a season to make sure that everything in there is really something that’s useful for multiple outfits. Once I’ve put together a bag of 8-10 items, I go to Buffalo Exchange. The key to getting them to buy your stuff is to go early before they’ve bought too much throughout the day AND to bring things that’re on season. It seems like you’d want to rid your closet of any unnecessary items from the previous season BUT at these resale shops they’re wanting to buy what people are looking for right now. It’s also a good idea to try to sell more trendy items.
  2. Have a garage sale: Now at a garage sale, you’re not limited by season OR product! Sell clothes and shoes from any season, furniture, home decor, etc. at your garage sale. DO be prepared to sell things at lower prices and to bargain on prices as your sale comes to a close. My mom and I are currently planning a big sale and actually thinking about doing two this summer! Highly recommend planning a garage sale with another friend or a family member. Do it on a Saturday towards the earlier weeks of the month when people are getting their paychecks and have that shoppin’ feelin’!
  3. Sell on online resale or yard pages: A few summers ago a Facebook page for my neighborhood popped up and it was a yard sale page where you could just post pics of items you wanted to sell with info and get cash so quickly! There are different rules on each page but most of the time the buyer will pick up the item from your porch. I recommend asking around or searching for sale pages like these if you want to sell from the comfort of behind the screen.
  4. Babysit: Babysitting may be one of the more obvious money makers but it can be so lucrative that I can’t write this post without mentioning it. One summer my mom commented her contact info on a private neighborhood Facebook group where parents were looking for sitters for their kids during the summer. It was perfect because that family needed a girl to drive their kids to camps/tutoring and hang with them at the pool during the summer. Reach out to neighbors, family friends, or find babysitting Facebook pages where moms post jobs regularly! Just remember to take into consideration their hourly rate (make sure it’s worth your time!), number of kiddos, and drive time. Something I learned from babysitting was to really factor in how much gas I’d be using when the family needed me to drive. I think it’s important to ask for at least some compensation for gas in addition to your hourly earnings!
  5. Sell a service/product: This may sound odd but stick with me. One summer I took jewelry making classes at a nearby beading store (I had a back injury and couldn’t do much so needed to #craft) and learned how to make pearl and leather jewelry. Think seaside pearls pieces for the beach, but I was able to make these pieces at such lower prices. Once I felt confident enough making a few designs, I got to selling! There was a bead wholesale store in Dallas where I’d get my supplies and I would take orders from either my friends or my mom’s friends. If you’ve got the crafty bug, consider selling jewelry, paintings, drawings, you name it. Maybe consider offering your tutoring, organizing, pet sitting, house sitting, meal planning etc. services to your neighbors or friends! You’d be surprised how many people are looking for your help during the summer and are willing to pay a close friend over someone they don’t know!

Friday Favorites

Friday Favorites 1200 800 neverwithoutlipstick

In all honesty, this has been a really tough week. My community experienced a sudden and tragic loss, and it has been so heartbreaking to watch the pain and sorrow that has ensued. But there is always hope in the eternity that we’re promised through Christ, and that has been what has gotten so many through this week.

I thought I’d share 5 things that have moved me this week as well as recent buys or obsessions that I want y’all to know about!

1. New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp: The wisdom in these daily devotionals has been essential this week through this hard time. But it is also an incredible devotional to come to daily for a new perspective on grace each and every day. The way that grace is presented and described has really challenged me to live differently and in constant gratitude.

2. Dolce Vita Jasmyn Ghillie Sandal: I had another pair of these sandals last summer and wore them to death, especially in Paris. They were so destroyed from all that love that I had to toss them. This made me super eager to get my hands on another pair, and when I say this leopard print I knew they had to be mine. I recommend going a half size up just to make enough room to get your foot through the laces.

3. ASOS Cold Shoulder Halter Dress: I have absolutely loved this dress (and the fact that it’s $46)! It’s cute, can go casual or dressy, and very lightweight for hot summers. This color is currently sold out BUT they’ve just put out two new patterns/colors of this dress, and I think I like them better to be honest!

4. Lord & Taylor Boater Hat: I don’t know about y’all but I have been on the hunt for a boater hat at just the right price. Boater hats are so chic and inherently French, and boy, have I been missing Paris lately! I found this boater hat for $18 (with 25% off with the code FRIENDS) and I can’t wait for it to come in. Consider throwing in a boater hat to your spring and summer looks – be brave and try it!

5. Kenneth Jay Lane Beaded Earrings: I bought these earrings last summer and I think they make any outfit a showstopping one! They may look like they’re heavy on the lobes but they really aren’t, I’m serious! I’m kicking myself because I paid full price for these and I found them in coral for $39 and this gold pair for $67 – WHAT?! Get your hands on these fast because I don’t think these prices will last forever!
